Exciting new job opportunities to join #TeamNRW in our flood and coastal risk management team
We’re looking to recruit to a number of exciting new roles, from flood warning and informing to flood risk asset management, to join our amazing Flood Risk team out on the ground and in our offices across Wales.
Meet Richard Kelland, our Flood and Coastal Risk Management lead for skills and development. In this blog, he tells us more about the incredible work our team does to help protect homes and communities across Wales from flooding, and what it’s like being part of #TeamNRW.
Why join our Flood Risk team?
I’ve been a part of #TeamNRW working in our Flood and Coastal risk team for over 20 years. It’s a really important part of the work we do - the impact of climate change means that we can expect to see more severe and frequent storms, higher sea-levels, and increased rates of coastal erosion in the future. This unfortunately means an increase in the risk of flooding and the negative impacts that is has on our people, our economy and our biodiversity.
We’re committed to making sure that we are in the best shape we can be to meet these future challenges. As part of that, we’re looking to expand our Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) team. We have a number of exciting and challenging posts available that cover the breadth of flood risk management work and we hope there are opportunities for people with a range of skills and experience to come and join the team over the coming weeks.
What’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management all about?
The work of FCRM is extremely wide ranging. The vital work that we do reduces the risk of flooding in Wales, here are just a few examples of how we do this:
• Building and maintaining flood defence assets and removing obstructions from our rivers
• Identifying the level of flood risk for locations across Wales by using new mapping and modelling technology
• Monitor and forecast river and tidal levels. We use this information to warn the public so that they can take appropriate action.
• We have teams on standby 24/7 to close flood gates and to operate pumps when needed.
• We run flood awareness campaigns to raise the issue of the risks of flooding and what actions you should take to reduce the risk.

FCRM has its part to play and we look to manage flood risk by using natural flood risk management techniques to store water in the landscape and to slow the flow of water reaching areas of risk downstream. Flood Warning & Informing Lead Specialist Advisor
We are recruiting a new Lead Specialist Advisor to lead the development of NRW's flood warning and informing policy and strategy and to deliver the transformation and continuous improvement of our flood warning and informing services. The role will lead programmes of work to improve our services and provide lead technical and specialist advice internally and externally on flood warning policy, systems and data. It will also be responsible for commissioning research and evaluating evidence.
Flood Forecasting Lead Specialist Advisor
We are recruiting a new Lead Specialist Advisor role to lead the development of NRW's flood forecasting policy and strategy and to deliver the transformation and continuous improvement of our flood forecasting capabilities. The role will lead programmes of work to improve our capabilities and provide lead technical and specialist advice internally and externally. It will also be responsible for commissioning research and evaluating evidence.
Flood Warning & Informing Specialist Advisor
We are recruiting a new Specialist Advisor to support the development of NRW's flood warning and informing policy and strategy and to lead, or contribute to, delivery projects to improve services. The role will also provide technical and specialist advice internally and externally on flood warning policy, systems and data.
Flood Warning & Informing Officer
We are recruiting a new Officer to provide technical, programme and project support to this new team. Two posts are already in place within the team whilst another three new posts, including this one, will be recruited in the Autumn.
This role will support a growing team which will deliver an ambitious programme of work to improve our flood warning and informing services over the next five years, including drawing on lessons learnt from recent severe flooding in Wales. The team will also lead work to deliver a replacement Flood Warning System when our current contracted service ends in 2022. This will entail close working through our partnership with the Environment Agency in England as well as with customers in Wales to ensure any new system is resilient, meets customer needs and keeps pace with technological change.
x 7 Integrated workforce posts
We have a number of fixed term appointments in our Integrated Workforce teams across north east and mid Wales. As a member of the Integrated Workforce team you will carry out maintenance activities and help to deliver our capital projects on site. This involves working on flood risk assets and on other assets we own and maintain. Incident response is a vital part of FCRMs role. A key element of your work in the Integrated Workforce team will be to carry out emergency response activities such as operating pumps and closing flood gates when needed.
As a field supervisor you will be responsible for the supervision of staff, contractors and work. A key element of the role is ensuring that Health & Safety, environmental and quality standards are met and that tasks are delivered to an agreed cost and timescale. You will play a vital part in delivering an agreed programme of maintenance work and emergency response activities that are connected to the management of NRW assets. These assets can include flood risk assets like flood embankments, and other assets on NRW managed land.
