The Client

Our client is one of the leading planning lead multidisciplinary consultancies, with around 50 offices throughout Europe and the emerging economies, albeit their flagship business is established within the UK.  A recipient of numerous awards, they deliver over service lines from engineering through the full compliment of environmental into the markets of development, infrastructure, transport through to international development.  Over recent years they have gained a considerable portfolio of high profile clients including frameworks for major public institutions.  As an organization however, they are planning lead and are known for delivering credibility into town, strategic and transport planning projects. 

The planning division is consistently rated within the top 5 in the UK, in terms of market share and due to recent changes in management and strategy, there is resource available and an appetite to double their 130 strong workforce within the next few years by investing into the planning division.  A UK Planning Board has been constructed to make sure that as this growth occurs, stakeholders in the planning division have visibility and an input into the strategy of the growth and direction of the business, also to allow a collaborative approach to larger strategic projects.

There is an opportunity for a senior individual to join the team and take responsibility helping to develop the business within the North East and Scotland.  The Newcastle office works closely with local offices including Edinburgh, where they are considered to be within the top 3 planning consultancies locally.  There is an appetite to increase their reach into the market in this region, hence they are investing in more resource, beginning with importing senior credibility in order to spearhead this development.  

The Role

The successful candidate would have responsibility for the office in Newcastle, also potentially with strategic influence over the Edinburgh office and would be instrumental in development of the business in this region.  A seat at the UK Planning Board would be extended for the right individual, such that they would have an input into the national growth strategy.  Responsibilities would include;

Provide a strategy for growth for Newcastle and the region, build on the existing team by identifying, recruiting and mentoring

Provide leadership within the organisation

Developing existing accounts to identify and secure new projects

Deliver projects to high technical standards within budget and timescale

The Individual

May Walters have been retained to find the individual with the right fit, who will integrate well culturally in addition to reinforcing technical and commercial acumen.  Therefore applications would be considered from senior individuals, in addition to those who are looking to make their mark in the industry. 

The successful individual would need to have as a minimum;

Appropriate qualifications and charterships, including RTPI

A track record of delivering planning services of at least 10 years

Experience of team development 

A desire to develop business and could demonstrate a track record of doing so
