The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment

The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) is a not-for-profit membership organisation established to promote best practice standards in environmental management, auditing and assessment.

As the premier body for the environment, the Institute offers unrivalled ongoing support to environmental professionals and aims to promote sustainability through improved environmental practice and performance.

With over 14,500 individual and corporate members based in 87 countries, IEMA is now a leading international membership-based organisation dedicated to the promotion of sustainable development, and to the professional development of individuals involved in the environmental profession, whether they are in the public, private or non-governmental sectors.

Each year, IEMA hold over 100 conferences, workshop and networking events for its members over an international profile.

IEMA is governed by a Council, elected from its membership. The rules of the Institute are set out in its Memorandum and Articles of Association. A Professional Standards Committee oversees the management and development of membership standards. IEMA is the Competent Body in the United Kingdom for EMAS the European Union's Eco Management and Audit Scheme.

IEMA also offers the Acorn Scheme, an officially recognised EMS standard recommended by the government. Acorn offers accredited recognition for organisations evaluating and improving their environmental performance through the phased implementation of an environmental management system (EMS). The scheme focuses on environmental improvements that are linked to business competitiveness and is flexible so that all types of organisations can participate.

Alongside these services, the Institute supports members by providing recognition of knowledge and skills through professional qualifications and through provision of the membership services, including IEMA Approved Training Courses. Look out for the IEMA stamp of approval when selecting your training course.
